What Is Purpose and Why Does It Matter?

Purpose is the fundamental reason behind everything we do. It’s what gives your life direction, joy and fulfillment. Without purpose, many people find themselves feeling lost or unfulfilled, constantly searching for something that would make their life feel worthwhile. The beauty of purpose is that it’s not static – it evolves as we evolve, learn and grow.

As you move through different seasons of life your purpose may shift, and that’s completely normal. There’s no “one thing” you’re meant to do for an entire lifetime. Embracing the possibility of a purpose change will prevent stagnation. If you question if it may be time for a new direction, that’s usually a sign that it is in fact past time and you will be well served to reassess your life plan and adjust your actions accordingly.

The Path to Living Your Purpose

Once you have a sense of your next purpose, the next step will be to align your actions with it. This is where the idea of your “path” comes into play. Your path consists of the actions, decisions, and efforts you make to move toward and eventually live into your purpose. You shouldn’t worry if the path seems long – the journey toward your purpose is part of the process. There will likely be many things to learn along the way.

Many people overthink this process because change can feel daunting. Shifting purpose usually involves stepping into the unknown, and our brains naturally resist the discomfort of change. It’s helpful to remember that excitement and fear can coexist. If an idea lights you up, even if it scares you, it’s worth exploring further.

Filtering Ideas and Taking Action

How do you know if an idea is in fact your next purpose? A good filter is to ask yourself two questions:

  1. Does it excite you
  2. Does it help others?

If your answer to both is “yes,” then that idea deserves your further exploration. Start small, experiment, and don’t be afraid to change course if it no longer feels aligned. You’ll gain valuable experience from every step of the journey, whether or not it leads directly to your ultimate purpose.

Embrace the Journey

Discovering your purpose isn’t about speed. Your purpose will continue to evolve as you do. The key is to stay curious and embrace possibilities. You can’t rush this. There are always additional things that you will need to discover along the way and that may lead you on a new path. Trust that every aligned step you take is bringing you closer to your true “why.”
